Recognizing the growing need for child care, London Village opened a day nursery in 1969. A new modern child care centre was built in 2008 to support infants, toddlers, and preschoolers, along with day camps for school-aged children.
In 2006, London Village launched its Adult Day Program to support seniors living with Alzheimer’s, dementia, and frailty. The program offers meaningful activities, engaging therapeutic recreation, social connection, and respite for caregivers.

I've just passed the fourth-year anniversary of my involvement with London Village, and I have to say that this time has been a blessing. Since December of 2021, I've had the pleasure and honour of working with an exceptional group of people, from senior leadership right up to our frontline supports, as we work to improve the quality and quantity of services being offered to the people of London. I'd like to share with you some numbers related to things that have evolved over the last four years to put the magnitude of work in perspective:
- With the support of The Salvation Army and our government partners at both the provincial and municipal levels we have been able to manage upgrades to our program spaces and equipment valued at over $1.7 million.
- We have increased participation in our Adult Day Program from an 82% occupancy to over 100%, including extra services being offered on Saturdays.
- We have powered through the pandemic and been able to bring our Child Care usage rate up to over 95%.
- Similarly, our Respite programs have grown and evolved to the point where we are constantly full and experiencing significantly greater requests for our services than time we have available.
- We have successfully received over $300,000 in new funding from the Ministry of Health Ontario West for the development of a 24/7 Weekend Respite program for people with cognitive issues such as Alzheimer and other dementias.
- We have expanded our Fee-For-Service program, primarily funded by individualized passport funding, to include evening and weekend drop-in supports.
I want to take this opportunity to formally thank our partners with the Provincial government, Ontario Health West, the Cities of London and Middlesex for walking with us as we try to provide supports and services to the people of this area. I also want to thank The Salvation Army for its continued support of our ministry unit in doing God's work.
My intention is to provide regular updates (at least once per quarter) in this space to keep you apprised of the important information available to all about life at London Village.
Thank you for your attention, you're caring and compassion, and May God bless you.
Arthur (Art) Mathews
